Call for Reflection on Social Challenges 2026-2027

The "la Caixa" Foundation's Social Observatory Call for Reflection supports initiatives aimed at reflection, debate, and the generation of knowledge around the main social challenges of today.
Its objective is to back projects that promote the exchange of perspectives between different social agents and contribute to a better understanding of social challenges, generate well-founded proposals, and promote social transformation.
WE ARE SEEKING
Projects that develop processes of reflection and dialogue on some of the major social challenges of the call.
Initiatives that promote exchange between social, academic, and institutional agents to generate knowledge and proposals for action.
Projects that help to strengthen the capacities of the participating organisations and sharing the learning obtained with other social agents.
The projects must address at least one of the following thematic areas:
Inequality, well-being and social cohesion
Health, care and life cycle
Social and demographic transformations
Governance, democracy and the global context
Technological and environmental transitions
WE ARE OFFERING
A financial grant of up to 10,000 euros for the development of activities involving reflection, debate, and the exchange of ideas.
A methodological framework and support during the development of the project.
The spaces, facilities, and resources of the "la Caixa" Foundation for carrying out the activities.
Support in the dissemination, visibility, and enhancement of activities and their results.

This call for proposals from the Social Observatory of the "la Caixa" Foundation aims to support research projects carried out jointly between organisations in the research field and those in the social sector.
The evaluation process of the proposals submitted has been undertaken by academic and social sector experts.

The Social Observatory launches a new edition of the call to fund excellent, innovative and socially-oriented research projects. Proposals must generate new knowledge to broaden our understanding of the major challenges of today’s society, using quantitative methods.
Proposals will be submitted from 7 to 22 January 2026 and will be structured through a two-stage procedure.

This call will support excellent social research projects that rely on robust quantitative evidence and an original and innovative approach to provide robust information to better understand current and emerging social challenges.
Projects must be focused on Spain and/or Portugal.
GRANTS
Up to €115,000 per project and up to 24 months duration.
WHO CAN APPLY?
The call is open to researchers who hold a PhD awarded more than 2 years before the call deadline as written in the Rules for participation (i.e. before 22nd January 2024).
The call is aimed at supporting proposals led by individual researchers of any nationality who conduct their research activity at a non-profit organization: public or private university or research centre legally based in Spain or Portugal.

At this stage, applicants will also be required to submit a brief document regarding their research expertise and social and public sector expertise (1 page each).
Both proposals and the documents required must be submitted in English. All information regarding this programme will be exclusively available in English.

The aim of the call was to support research projects in the social sciences based on new quantitative-based research, with the aim of studying society as a whole, as well as the social impacts of a given phenomenon.
The evaluation process of the 213 proposals that met the eligibility criteria has been carried out by social science academics with expertise in quantitative methodologies. The evaluation is blind: the evaluators do not know the identity of the applicants, they only have access to the submitted project, which in turn is completely anonymous.

GOALS
This call will support excellent social research projects that rely on robust quantitative evidence and an original and innovative approach to provide robust information to better understand current and emerging social challenges.
Projects must be focused on Spain and/or Portugal.
GRANTS
Up to €115,000 per project and up to 24 months duration.
WHO CAN APPLY?
The call is open to researchers who can demonstrate research independence and evidence of prior achievements. For this reason, applicants need to meet the following requirements:
Certify at least 1 scientific article published in Q1 journals according to the rankings Scimago Journal Rank (SJR) from Scopus or the Journal Citations Report (JCR) from Web of Science, in the last 5 years before the closure of the call. For the latter, only indexes Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) and Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) are considered.
Hold a PhD awarded more than 2 years before the call deadline as written in the Rules for participation (i.e. before 23th January 2022).
The call is aimed at supporting proposals led by individual researchers of any nationality who conduct their research activity at a non-profit organization: public or private university or research centre legally based in Spain or Portugal.

The aim of the call was to support research projects in social sciences that study the social impact of longer lifespans through the conducting of a quantitative survey.

Social Research Call 2019 (SRC 2019)

El Observatorio Social de ”la Caixa” lanza una nueva convocatoria competitiva para financiar proyectos de investigación que destaquen por su excelencia, carácter innovador y orientación social. Las propuestas se basarán en metodologías cuantitativas y su objetivo será generar nuevo conocimiento que ayude a comprender los retos sociales más relevantes de la actualidad.
Primera fase: 15 mayo – 13 junio 2019
Segunda Fase: 25 septiembre – 16 octubre 2019

OBJETIVOS:
La presente convocatoria tiene por objeto apoyar proyectos de investigación social que destaquen por su excelencia y que estén basados en datos cuantitativos que proporcionen, mediante un enfoque original e innovador, información robusta y sólida para comprender en profundidad los retos sociales que España debe afrontar en el presente y futuro.
AYUDAS:
Se prevé financiar proyectos de 100.000 euros cada uno con una duración máxima de 24 meses.
A QUIÉN VA DIRIGIDA:
La convocatoria se dirige a investigadores en activo, que puedan acreditar una trayectoria científica independiente y corroborar su producción científica reciente. Por este motivo, los candidatos deberán cumplir los siguientes requisitos:
Investigadores emergentes: los candidatos que hayan obtenido el título de doctorado entre dos y siete años antes de la fecha límite de la convocatoria (es decir, entre el 13 de junio de 2012 y el 13 de junio de 2017) deberán haber publicado un mínimo de tres artículos científicos en los cinco años anteriores a la fecha de cierre de la convocatoria.
Investigadores consolidados: los candidatos que hayan obtenido el título de doctorado con una anterioridad de siete años o más con respecto a la fecha límite de la convocatoria (es decir antes del 13 de junio de 2012) deberán haber publicado un mínimo de cinco artículos científicos en los cinco años anteriores a la fecha de cierre de la convocatoria.
La convocatoria está abierta a investigadores de todas las nacionalidades que lleven a cabo su investigación en una institución de investigación sin ánimo de lucro: universidades y centros de investigación públicos y privados con sede en España.

PRESENTACIÓN DE SOLICITUDES
La presentación de propuestas se estructura conforme a un proceso incremental de dos etapas. Los candidatos deberán presentar una propuesta-resumen breve, de un máximo de tres páginas, que describa la idea del proyecto de investigación y el reto o los retos sociales abordados, destacando los aspectos originales e innovadores.
Los candidatos cuyas propuestas breves hayan sido preseleccionadas y pasen a la fase siguiente, serán invitados a presentar una propuesta completa, de un máximo de 15 páginas, que profundice sobre información más detallada del proyecto y su metodología. Además, deberán acreditar los méritos y experiencia que demuestran su competencia para llevar a cabo la investigación propuesta.

The Social Observatory of ”la Caixa” Foundation launches an open and competitive call to fund excellent, innovative and socially-oriented research projects. Proposals must generate new knowledge to broaden our understanding of the major challenges of today’s society, using quantitative methods.
The submission of proposals is structured through a two-stage procedure.
Submission period for proposals: January 9-24, 2023.
GOALS
This call will support excellent social research projects that rely on robust quantitative evidence and an original and innovative approach to provide robust information to better understand current and emerging social challenges.
Projects must be focused on Spain and/or Portugal.
GRANTS
Up to €100,000 per project and up to 24 months duration.
WHO CAN APPLY?
The call is open to researchers who can demonstrate research independence and evidence of prior achievements. For this reason, applicants need to meet the following requirements:
Certify at least 1 scientific article published in Q1 journals according to the rankings Scimago Journal Rank (SJR) from Scopus or the Journal Citations Report (JCR) from Web of Science, in the last 5 years before the closure of the call. For the latter, only indexes Social Science Citation Index (SSCI) and Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE) are considered.
Hold a PhD awarded more than 2 years before the call deadline as written in the Rules for participation (i.e. before 24th January 2021).
The call is aimed at supporting proposals led by individual researchers of any nationality who conduct their research activity at a non-profit organization: public or private university or research centre legally based in Spain or Portugal.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE
The submission of proposals is structured incrementally through a two-phase procedure. Applicants will first submit a 3-page short proposal describing the research idea and the social challenge(s) addressed, taking into consideration its novel and innovative aspects.
Applicants with successful short proposals will be invited to submit a full proposal of up to 15 pages providing detailed information on the project and the methodology. At this stage, applicants will also be required to submit a brief document regarding their research expertise and social and public sector expertise (1 page each).
Both proposals and the documents required must be submitted in English. All information regarding this programme will be exclusively available in English.
