Emotional well-being in children with neurodevelopmental disorders and their families
-
1Families of children with neurodevelopmental disorders claim that their children experience greater emotional suffering than those without these diagnoses, expressed through symptoms of depression, anxiety and aggressive behaviour.
-
2When children have more than one diagnosis, their emotional suffering, and that of their families, increases significantly.
-
3Girls displaying two or more neurodevelopmental disorder diagnoses show significantly greater emotional distress than boys.
-
4Difficulties in emotional regulation are observed in both children and their parents. Children with neurodevelopmental disorders find it difficult to manage their emotions, and their families find it difficult to accept their emotions.
-
5Research shows the need to adopt a broader and more holistic approach to understand children in their context, as well as their families, not only as informants but as part of the assessment and intervention.
