School meal subsidies improve pupils’ academic results in Catalan language skills
-
1Students who benefit from a partial school meal subsidy – equivalent to 70% of the cost of their daily menu – obtain better results in Catalan test scores than those children who apply for a subsidy but do not obtain one.
-
2Grades in Catalan are also higher among beneficiary children in those academic years in which they are awarded a full subsidy – equivalent to 100% of the cost of their daily menu – in comparison with the grades obtained by the same pupils in academic years in which they are only granted a partial subsidy.
-
3The profile of the child who benefits most from the meal subsidy programme is that of a boy, who attends a large, low-complexity school, in which he shares his day-to-day life with children from more advantaged socioeconomic backgrounds.
-
4School meal subsidies allow beneficiary pupils to spend more time at school, which favours their socialisation and interaction with classmates who speak Catalan on a regular basis. This exchange facilitates improved linguistic competence in Catalan among children in situations of vulnerability.
-
5Beneficiary pupils also show higher levels of subjective well-being, especially in terms of their satisfaction with classmates and student life.
