Basic competencies in the adult population (15-65 years) in reading comprehension and proficiency in mathematics

The Programme for International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC), also known as the PISA assessment test for adults, evaluates performance in reading comprehension and proficiency in mathematics among the population aged from 15 to 65 years.

The international PIAAC survey on competencies of the adult population assesses, in all the participating countries, two basic skills. Firstly, “reading comprehension”, understood as the ability to understand different types of written texts and use the information they contain. This is a basic requirement for developing more advanced skills and to favour economic and social development. Secondly, “proficiency in mathematics”, is understood as the capacity to use, apply, interpret and communicate mathematical information and concepts.
